All About Stainless Steel Jewelry

Why stainless steel?

We’re committed to crafting our jewelry with only the best alternative metals. That’s why we love stainless steel, a metal renowned for its durability, versatility and aesthetic appeal. Here’s a bit more information on the many benefits of stainless steel:

It’s Tough: Stainless steel is resilient. Renowned for its hardiness and ability to resist tarnish and rust, stainless steel is built to withstand just about anything. That includes your day-to-day life, no matter how busy or intense things might get. Stainless steel is ready to accompany you on any adventure.

It’s Affordable: Stainless steel offers the sleek, shiny aesthetic of gold or silver, but without the high cost. With the price of gold continually increasing, stainless steel becomes a better option every day.

It’s Versatile: Stainless steel is a multitasking metal that can be used to make just about anything, including our huge collection of men’s jewelry. From earrings to wedding bands, stainless steel jewelry comes in a wide array of colors, styles and designs. Take a minute to explore our website and we think you’ll agree: there’s something for everyone here.

It’s Simple: Stainless steel jewelry is easy to maintain. Keep it in a soft pouch or jewelry box, give it the occasional clean, don’t slam it against anything and you’re pretty much in the clear. How easy is that?

Overall, stainless steel jewelry is a great option if you’re looking for jewelry that can keep up with your lifestyle and look good doing it.

Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish?

Stainless steel jewelry is very resistant to tarnish. Over many years, if it’s exposed to chemicals, direct light, saltwater or other harsh conditions, it will eventually begin to lose its luster. However, if you take good care of your stainless steel jewelry, it will resist tarnish.

Can stainless steel jewelry get wet?

Technically, yes: stainless steel jewelry can get wet. Washing your hands or cleaning your stainless steel jewelry with regular tap water will not harm it. However, there are some caveats here.

Stainless steel is very durable, and it won’t corrode when exposed to pure water. However, water is often treated with chemicals, and those chemicals can corrode your stainless steel jewelry over time. Pools, for instance, are treated with chlorine. Chlorine helps keep pools clean and safe, but it’s very harsh on jewelry. The water in your shower may also be treated. And even if it isn’t, the products you use in the shower may contain corrosive chemicals. Natural bodies of water like the ocean contain salt and other harsh elements that can also corrode your jewelry.

To put it simply, stainless steel is tough. However, it is not a good idea to expose it to water, apart from regular tap water. Over time, the harsh chemicals found in treated water can wear away at stainless steel and corrode your jewelry.

How long does stainless steel jewelry last?

Stainless steel jewelry can last for years–even decades–as long as you take care of it. Try not to frequently expose it to harsh conditions, don’t hit it against anything, give it the occasional clean, and store it safely. These simple steps will help you keep your jewelry safe and shining for years to come.

Does stainless steel turn green?

Quality stainless steel jewelry, like the surgical grade stainless steel we use in Robert Alton jewelry, will not turn green.

Why do certain types of jewelry turn green (or turn your skin green)? Contrary to popular belief, it's not the jewelry itself causing the problem. It is due to a chemical reaction between metal alloys in the jewelry and acids from skin or body products. Copper is the most common culprit.

The good news is, Robert Alton does not use metal alloys in our jewelry. Rest assured that when you shop Robert Alton, you're purchasing top-quality stainless steel that will resist corrosion, resist tarnish, and won't turn green.

Does stainless steel jewelry fade?

When properly cared for, stainless steel jewelry does not fade easily. Like all jewelry, it can eventually lose some of its shine and luster. However, if you clean your jewelry regularly, store it properly, and keep it away from water and harsh chemicals, it will maintain its luster for many years.

Using a jewelry polishing cloth can also help improve your jewelry's shine. Wipe your stainless steel jewelry with a polishing cloth after cleaning it, or whenever it looks a bit dull.

How to clean stainless steel jewelry

Cleaning your jewelry is easy, and you can do it with products you already have lying around the house. The best way to do it is with warm tap water, dish soap, and a soft toothbrush or cloth.

  1. In a bowl, make a cleaning solution. Use warm water and mix in a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Let your stainless steel jewelry soak in the solution for about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove it from the bowl (be careful--use tongs if the water is still too warm) and gently scrub it with a soft toothbrush or soft cloth.
  4. Give it another brief soak in the bowl, then rinse off any remaining soap with warm tap water.
  5. You can let your jewelry air dry, or dry it with a microfiber cloth.
  6. Optionally, you can use a jewelry polishing cloth to give your stainless steel jewelry a quick polish.
